The Parisian Girl

The Parisian Girl

“She's the anti 'it girl.' She doesn't look like she's trying” - Garance Dorè

Ahhhhh Paris, the fashion capital of the world. Filled with many beige streets to explore, baroque windows to gaze out of and little corner cafes to sip on your café noisette. The women grace the streets with their nonchalant, “I don’t care” attitude; Tousled hair, no make-up, a baggy trench coat. Nothing fancy, right? So how is it that they look so incredibly put together and chic?

The Parisian secret is not to look perfect, it’s to look authentic; Look like you. The only way to look effortless is to be effortless. With that, there comes an attitude , It almost says “This is me, deal with it”. And I think we can all admire that. We all want to be confident in ourselves, and Parisian women wear confidence like it’s all they’ve ever known.

FRENCH CHIC 101

“With French women you first see the woman and then you see the clothes” - Carine Roitfeld

  • A typical Parisian outfit would be jeans, a simple shirt and comfortable heels. Less is more when it comes to French chic.

  • Keep your closet neutral - navy, white, black, beige.

  • “The French are into style, not fashion”. – Marie Anne- Lecoeur. French women don’t crave luxury items, they crave quality timepieces. Don’t buy something just because it’s designer, buy something because it looks good on you.

  • Do NOT wear logos or brand names if you are trying to achieve the Parisian look. You are not a billboard. As Carine Roitfeld said, “In France you cannot see what labels we are wearing. It is very snobby."

  • “They (French women) don't like to be over-sexy. The sexiness comes from the way they walk and hold themselves." - Julia Restoin Roitfeld.

  • Gym and sports clothes are for exercise, not everyday wear.

  • Undone hair, short nails and minimal is a must if you want to give off Parisian vibes. Show who you are, don’t try to be the perfect and ideal women, because she’s not real, so don’t waste your time trying.

  • To fully embrace the French chic style, don’t be fake. wear your natural hair, real nails, no fake lashes. Be you.

  • Age gracefully, show the world a face that has lived a life!

  • If you’re not wearing heels, make sure your flats are stylish.

  • Have signature items - perfume, clothing item, bag etc

  • No matter what you do, make it look easy, chic and graceful .

FRENCH WOMEN TO FOLLOW

@violette_fr - Estée Lauder Global Beauty Director Violette has an extremely aesthetically pleasing Instagram. If you’re into make-up you should also subscribe to her Youtube channel. Her makeup style is very down my alley, so if you also like simple looks with pops of colour, she’s the girl for you.

@jeannedamas - Jeanna Damas (founder of Rouje Paris) is the epitome of French style. She kills the street style game every time she steps outside her door. Parisian staple pieces are sold on the Rouje Paris website, which has worldwide shipping.

@dennielias - Founder of sustainable clothing brand Club Sirena , Denni is a girl to follow. She is great for travel inspiration and her feed gives off a typical blogger vibe, but better, because the photos are usually in Paris.

@carolinedemaigret - Caroline is basically a French chic guru (she wrote a book all about, which you will see in an upcoming post) She’s a music producer, Chanel ambassador and author. So basically she’s an all around kind of French girl.
